Drive-In / Drive-Through Pallet Racking

Efficient and Space-Saving Storage Solution

Drive-in and Drive-Through pallet racking is a high-density storage system designed for warehouses that need to store large quantities of the same, or fast moving, SKU (stock keeping unit). It is a type of racking system where pallets are stored in a continuous block without aisles between them, allowing maximum space utilisation.

What is Drive-In & Drive-Through Pallet Racking?

Drive-in pallet racking consists of rails that run vertically from the front to the back of the block allowing forklift trucks to enter the racking structure to load and unload pallets, compared with conventional pallet racking which consists of beams running horizontally. The forklifts drive directly into the rack lanes, eliminating the need aisles. The system operates on a First-in, Last Out (FILO) principle, meaning that the last pallet loaded into a lane will be the first one to be accessed and unloaded.

In drive-through pallet racking, the racks are arranged in rows with a clear entry and exit point at each end. Forklifts can drive directly into the rack structure and access the pallets from either side. Drive-through pallet racking typically follows a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method. Pallets that are loaded first will be the first to be accessed and unloaded, allowing pallets to be loaded from one end of the block and unloaded from the opposite end.

Key Features and Benefits

1. High-Density Storage

Drive-in racking maximizes storage capacity by eliminating the need for aisles. Pallets are stored in continuous lanes, allowing for high-density storage and efficient use of available space. This is particularly beneficial for facilities with a large volume of inventory or limited floor space.

2. Cost-Effective

With its compact design, drive-in racking optimizes the use of available space, allowing you to store more inventory without expanding your warehouse. This cost-effective solution eliminates the need for additional aisles and reduces overall construction and operational expenses.

3. Increased Storage Efficiency

With drive-in racking, every inch of the available space is utilized effectively. The compact design enables more pallets to be stored in a smaller area, resulting in increased storage efficiency. Pallet storage and retrieval can be executed from a single aisle, reducing travel distance for the forklift truck leading to an increase in overall productivity.

4. Enhanced Safety

Drive-in racking provides a safer storage solution compared to block stacking. With drive-in racking, pallets are securely stored within designated rack lanes, minimising the risk of pallets collapsing or falling. This reduces the chances of accidents, injuries, and product damage that can occur with unstable block stacking.

It's important to note that drive-in racking may not be suitable for all types of inventory, especially those requiring frequent and selective access. However, when used correctly, for facilities with specific storage needs and inventory characteristics, drive-in pallet racking offers an efficient and space-saving solution.
